Our Privacy Commitment

FlashForge is built with privacy first. Your flashcards, study sessions, and personal data never leave your device unless you explicitly choose to use AI generation features.

Data Collection & Storage

Client-Side Data (Your Browser Only)

The following data is stored only in your browser using IndexedDB:

• Flashcard Decks: All your decks, cards, terms, and definitions
• Study History: Review sessions, ratings, and spaced repetition scheduling
• Study Statistics: Progress metrics, streaks, and performance data
• Settings & Preferences: Theme preferences, study settings, and algorithm customization

AI Generation Feature (Optional)

When you explicitly choose to use the AI flashcard generation feature:

• What We Send: The text or document content you provide for card generation
• AI Provider: Vercel AI Gateway (using OpenAI GPT-5-nano model)
• Purpose: To analyze your content and generate flashcard suggestions
• Processing: Your content is processed by the AI provider according to their terms
• Retention: We do not store the content you submit; it's processed in real-time
• User Control: You can review and edit all AI-generated cards before saving

Third-Party Services

Analytics

We use Ahrefs Web Analytics to understand how visitors use our site:

• Data Collected: Page views, referrers, device types (anonymous)
• Purpose: Improve site performance and user experience
• Privacy: No personally identifiable information (PII) is collected
• Provider: Ahrefs Privacy Policy

Vercel AI Gateway (AI Features Only)

When you use AI generation:

• Provider: Vercel AI Gateway → OpenAI
• Data Sent: Only the text/document content you explicitly provide for generation
• Purpose: Generate flashcard suggestions from your content
• Privacy: Processed according to Vercel Privacy Policy and OpenAI Privacy Policy

Data You Control

Export Your Data

You can export all your flashcards and study data at any time:

• Format: JSON backup file
• Contents: All decks, cards, review history, and settings
• Use Case: Backup, migration, or archival

Delete Your Data

You control your data:

• Clear Individual Decks: Delete specific decks from the library
• Clear All Data: Use the settings page to completely erase all local data
• Browser Storage: Clearing browser data will also remove all FlashForge data

What We DON'T Do

• ❌ NO user accounts or authentication - No passwords, no registration
• ❌ NO server-side databases - Your data stays in your browser
• ❌ NO tracking cookies - No advertising or behavioral tracking
• ❌ NO selling data - We never sell, rent, or share your personal information
• ❌ NO email collection - We don't ask for your email unless you contact us
• ❌ NO third-party advertising networks - No ad trackers

Security

Browser Storage

Your data is stored in your browser's IndexedDB:

• Isolation: Data is isolated to your browser on your device
• Access: Only accessible by cardsmith.io (same-origin policy)
• Encryption: Subject to your device's security and browser protections

AI Generation Security

When using AI features:

• HTTPS: All communications encrypted in transit
• No Storage: We don't store the content you submit for generation
• Provider Security: Subject to Vercel and OpenAI security practices

Children's Privacy

FlashForge does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Since we don't collect personal information, users of all ages can use the app safely. Parents should supervise children's use of AI generation features.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy occasionally. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your data:

• Access: You can access all your data via the settings/export feature
• Deletion: You can delete all data via the settings page
• Portability: You can export your data in JSON format
• Opt-Out: Don't use AI features if you don't want content processed by third parties
