What makes a good cloze deletion

  • Hide the key term, not filler. Blanking “the” or “of” tests nothing.
  • One blank per card for most sentences. Several blanks on one card become a list, which is hard to remember.
  • Keep enough context that only one answer fits. “The {{c1::mitochondrion}} makes ATP” is better than “The {{c1::mitochondrion}} is important.”
  • Break lists into siblings. “The primary colours of light are {{c1::red}}, {{c2::green}} and {{c3::blue}}” gives three small cards instead of one big one.
  • Add a hint when there are synonyms: {{c1::Canberra::city}} shows [city] in the blank.

Cloze cards are a form of active recall: you produce the missing word rather than recognising it. Turn a whole page of notes into cloze cards at once with the AI flashcard generator (choose “fill in the blank”), and learn more about writing good cards in how to make flashcards.

Questions people ask

What is a cloze deletion?

A fill-in-the-blank flashcard: a sentence with one key word or phrase hidden, like “The capital of Australia is [...]”. The name comes from the “cloze test” devised by Wilson Taylor in 1953 for measuring reading comprehension.

What does {{c1::…}} mean?

It is the cloze syntax used by Anki and Cardsmith. Text inside {{c1::…}} is hidden on card 1, {{c2::…}} on card 2, and so on. Several deletions with the same number are hidden together on one card. You can add a hint after a second double colon: {{c1::Canberra::city}}.

When should I use cloze cards instead of question cards?

Cloze cards are great for definitions, vocabulary in context, dates, and breaking lists into single items. For “why” and “how” questions, a normal question/answer card usually tests understanding better.

Can I import these into Anki?

Yes. Export the deck as tab-separated text and import it into Anki using the Cloze note type; the {{c1::…}} syntax is identical.
