Your cards will appear here as they are written. Nothing is saved until you choose a deck.

How to get better AI flashcards

  • Feed it the material, not the topic. The generator works from your text, so cards match what your lecturer actually covered. Paste one chapter or lecture at a time rather than a whole book.
  • Pick cloze for definitions and vocabulary, Q&A for processes, causes and comparisons.
  • Edit before saving. Delete cards on things you already know cold and fix anything vague. Checking the drafts is itself a first review.
  • Split big cards. If an answer is a list of five things, it should probably be five cards (see how to make flashcards).

Making cards by hand has a benefit too: deciding what to ask is itself a form of processing. A good compromise is to generate a first draft here, then rewrite the handful of cards that matter most in your own words.

Questions people ask

Is the AI flashcard generator free?

Yes. There’s no account and no paywall, just a fair-use limit of a few generations every ten minutes so it stays free for everyone.

What files can I turn into flashcards?

PDF (including scanned PDFs), Word .docx, PowerPoint .pptx, text and Markdown files, and photos or screenshots of notes, including handwriting. Text is pulled out in your browser; scanned pages and photos are read by an AI vision model.

Can it make flashcards from handwritten notes?

Yes. Take a clear, well-lit photo (or paste a screenshot) and the AI reads the handwriting before writing cards. Messy writing can be misread, so check the drafts.

Can it make flashcards from just a topic?

Yes. Switch to “From a topic”, type what you’re studying and pick a level. Those cards come from the AI’s general knowledge rather than your course, so compare them with your textbook.

How accurate are AI-generated flashcards?

They are drafted from your material, but AI can still misread or oversimplify. Every card appears in an editable list before you save it: fix or delete anything off. Checking them doubles as a first review.

Can I make flashcards in another language?

Yes. Choose a card language, for example English notes into Spanish cards, or leave it on “Same as the material”.

What is the difference between Q&A and cloze cards?

Q&A cards ask a question with a separate answer. Cloze cards hide a word or phrase inside a sentence (fill in the blank), which suits definitions, dates and vocabulary in context.

Can I export the cards to Anki or Quizlet?

Yes. Save them to a deck, then use Export (tab-separated), which both Anki and Quizlet import. You can also print them or take a multiple-choice practice test.

What happens to my notes?

Text and images are sent once to the AI model to draft the cards and are not stored by Cardsmith. The finished cards are saved only in your browser.
