How Cardsmith works
1. Make the cards. Type them, paste a list exported from Quizlet or Anki, turn sentences into fill-in-the-blank cloze cards, or let the AI flashcard generator draft them from a PDF, PowerPoint slides, typed notes or a photo of handwritten notes.
2. Study what’s due. A study session shows only the cards scheduled for today. You try to answer from memory first (that’s active recall), flip, and rate yourself honestly.
3. Let the schedule do the rest. Cards you know drift weeks into the future; cards you miss come back in minutes. This is spaced repetition, and it’s built on the SM-2 algorithm that also inspired Anki.
Check yourself. Before an exam, turn any deck into a multiple-choice or written practice test.
4. Keep the streak. Ten minutes a day beats three hours the night before. The heat strip above counts every review you do.
Cardsmith was previously called FlashForge. Same free tool, new name.
Questions people ask
Is Cardsmith really free with no signup?
Yes. There is no account, no email and no paywall. Your decks are saved in your own browser (localStorage), so they stay on this device. Use Export or Backup to move them elsewhere.
How does the study session decide which cards to show?
Each card has its own schedule based on the SM-2 spaced-repetition algorithm. When you rate a card Again, Hard, Good or Easy, the next review is pushed out accordingly: a card you know well might come back in weeks, one you missed returns in about 10 minutes.
Can I import my Quizlet or Anki cards?
Yes. Export your Quizlet set or Anki deck as plain text (tab between front and back), then paste it into “Import a list”. Cardsmith also accepts “term ; definition”, CSV and Q:/A: formats.
Can I make flashcards from my notes automatically?
Yes. The AI flashcard generator turns pasted notes, PDFs (including scans), Word and PowerPoint files, photos of handwritten notes, or just a topic into question/answer or fill-in-the-blank cards you can edit before saving.
Is there a limit on decks or cards?
No limits on decks or cards; browser storage holds tens of thousands of text cards. AI generation has a fair-use limit of a few runs every ten minutes.
Can I test myself instead of just flipping cards?
Yes. The practice test generator turns any deck into a multiple-choice or type-the-answer quiz, built instantly or written by AI with explanations.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Your decks are deleted along with it. Download a JSON backup from each deck now and then; you can restore it with “Restore backup”.
